The Story of The Woodlands Community Church
The Woodlands Community Church began meeting on September 15, 1983 in The Woodlands Interfaith Center with Floyd Disney as pastor. The church wasn’t officially organized until November 4, 1984, with twenty-two chartering members. Hank Fortune was the pastor at that time. In September of 1985, Winston Wilson accepted the pastorate at The Woodlands Community Church. The Wilson family gave much of themselves to enable us to enjoy what we now have. The Wilsons continued in service here until November of 1993 when Warren and Sherri Foxworthy came to pastor our congregation.
On May 3, 1987, the congregation began meeting at 2120 Buckthorne Place, near the old information center. This was an answer to prayer. A space of 3,500 square feet was leased to the church for $1.00, including utilities. This generous offer was made on behalf of The Woodlands Corporation. We thank God for a community that takes an interest in providing churches for the people who are settling here. On March 15, 1987, a groundbreaking ceremony was conducted on the present site, which had been purchased by the Houston District Church of the Nazarene several years earlier. Construction began on our present facility in early 1988. The first services were held in mid-summer of that year. Dedication of the church building was held November 20, 1988.
Realizing the necessity of obtaining additional acreage for future development, the church began to pursue the possibility of purchasing more property from The Woodlands Corporation in 1995. In early spring of 1996, in a bold step of faith, the church doubled its property size by purchasing two and a half additional acres for future development. It is our dream to have a total church campus, nestled beautifully in the woods, complete with a multipurpose auditorium, performing arts center, and other functional buildings.
